I had the same problem, the exterminator did no good. I bought some boric acid powder and put down in cracks and crevices haven’t’ had any ants since then. Follow directions on the bottle, you can find it at Wal-Mart…..=)
use table salt yes put it where ever they are comeing into your house if it is not wet outside but it all they way around your house you do not have to use a lot just sprinkle it all over close to the house and inside where ever you see them they go away .. good for out side patios etc. on camping trips when you going to be there a few days etc….
Hi, the sure-fire way to handle this: go to a hardware store and get Terro (do NOT accept any substitutes!). When yo get home, get about 6-7 little 1″ x 1″ or 2″ x 2″ squares of real thing cardboard – like from a cereal box and put a drop of Terro (ONLY Terro!) on each, smear it around a little. Then place them around the room and let them be there for a few days. The ant ingest this stuff, take it home and have dinner with the rest of the ants and they all die, get killed, pass away or whatever. Don’t let any pets you might have eat this…they too will die, get killed….
Be sure you remember where you put them, write it down, or you’ll accidently leave one out and if someone brings a baby… TERRO!
For ants on the counter top, wipe down counter top with white vinegar. To prevent ants from coming into the house, or getting into cupboards, sprinkle dried mint or red pepper where they are entering the house and in the cupboards. If you know where the anthills are make a mixture of 50 percent borax (sold in laundry aisle of supermarkets) and 50 percent confectioner’s sugar and place near anthill. The ants are attracted to the sugar and carry the fatal borax/sugar combination back to the nest to feed the queen and other ants. Soon all ants will be dead. Do not put this mixture where children and pets can ingest it. To get rid of anthills, pour 3 gallons of boiling water down them. This is best when done when the ants are active and at the surface. Do not do it near flowers or they will die.
I elimininated ants in my bathroom by:
1) Sealing off all access areas such as cracks or holes in the wall, around water piping and the window sill. See if you can trace their path to an entry point then seal that opening.
2)Spreading a thin stream of borax detergent around the base of exterior walls of your house. Ants won’t cross this material and it isn’t harmful to the environment.
The key is to eliminate the entry points.
I use Clark Pest Control Co for termites. They install bait stations around the perimeter of my house. When termites begin eating the wood in the stations, Clark adds a chemical to the wood. The termites carry this material back to their nest where it kills the entire colony. Perhaps the pest control company has a system like that for ants.
Good luck!
table salt..it’s the best …it is safe to use around kids and small pets and it is inexpensive as well
i use bay leaves. (the ones you use for cooking) just put them where you see the ants coming from. they don’t like the smell and will stay away. good luck.
If you want some home remedies (I assume you’re sick of chemicals if you got fed up and called an exterminator) below is a nice looking resource I came across today. When we had a problem I used a bunch of ant traps when they entered, and cleaned, cleaned, cleaned. The previous tenants had left crumbs/food particles in the room, and it was on a ground floor in an aging building, so they marched right inside. I hated it, and would have loved to have know that spraying vinegar along their path supposedly stops them, as well as some other simple methods listed on the site. Try to look for hidden treats – soda that sprayed on the wall/legs of furniture, crumbs along the edges of the floor – you may need to move furniture and try shampooing the rugs (if applicable).
